Andy Whitfield Attacking Cancer like a True Champion

Spartacus Gods of the Arena Premiere

Many watched the 'Spartacus Gods of the Arena' premiere with engaging anticipation and for most there was a void of Andy being absent from it.

Andy stay strong, remain determined and know that many prayers are with you.

It can be strange how we go through our lives in rush-fervent mode and never look around to who or what is around us.

Breath, we sometimes tell ourselves. Enjoy this very moment and smile.

So we do, feeling better. A little lighter and carry on with our day

A favorite saying, "Love when hated, laugh when crying and try not to take this life too seriously or you'll scream" ~me.

Indeed.

Remember our journey as an adventurous one. A moment in time when we slow our hurry, breath deeply, love, laugh and in life, remain truly triumphant.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand creator Steven S. DeKnight has dropped hints about the show's second season.

He told TV Guide that the new thirteen-part run will be "a hell of a ride".

"The only juice I'll give you is that it's extra sweet," he teased. "We're actually about halfway through figuring out [the season]."

DeKnight added that he will be "deeply saddened" to enter production on the season without original star Andy Whitfield.

"He was a huge part of the show's success," he said. "We wish him the best and a speedy recovery."

He further explained that Whitfield's replacement Liam McIntyre had been found after "an exhaustive search".

"[We needed] somebody not to replace Andy but to step into the role of Spartacus," he explained. "We feel very fortunate that we were able to find Liam, who we felt really embodied everything we were looking for in the character looking forward."

Production on the next season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand is expected to begin this spring.

Spartacus' Andy Whitfield Attacking Cancer "Like a True Champion" (TV Guide)

Spartacus: Blood and Sand creator Steven. S. DeKnight wants Andy Whitfield's fans to know the actor is actively fighting the disease.

"Andy of course is being very private about his condition and what he's going through with his family," DeKnight said Tuesday to discuss the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. "It's been a little while, but the last thing I heard was that he was attacking it like a true champion. I have the utmost faith that he will pull through with flying colors."

The 36-year-old Whitfield has been battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, forcing him to drop out of the Starz series in September. Liam McIntyre was recently announced as Whitfield's replacement as the titular gladiator.

"We're all just praying for him," Manu Bennett, who plays fellow gladiator Crixus, said. "When the cancer has moved on as it has, it's a bigger battle for him. I can't tell you how deeply saddened it has been for all of us to know that our friend, our colleague, our inspiration has been given such a challenge. It's going to be a longer period of time before any of us know what is going to be the result with Andy right now. All communications would indicate that he's in very high spirits and that he's fighting this thing with as much strength as he fought [with] on the show."

In the meantime, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will premiere the first of six episodes Friday at 10/9c. The series focuses on Batiatus (John Hannah) before his ludus becomes a contender in the gladiator tournaments and Crixus before he becomes a fighting champion.

In the spring, production will begin on the second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

"The only juice I'll give you is that it's extra sweet," DeKnight said. "Season 2 is shaping up to be a hell of a ride. We're actually about halfway through figuring [it] out. We're obviously deeply saddened that Andy couldn't continue with us. He was a huge part of the show's success. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery."

As for Whitfield's replacement, DeKnight said they did " an exhaustive search to find somebody not to replace Andy but to step into the role of Spartacus. We feel very fortunate that we were able to find Liam, who we felt really embodied everything we were looking for in the character looking forward."

"Although Andy Whitfield had to step out of Starz's Spartacus series while he fights non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the show lives on through a new miniseries, a prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." The new show, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," stars Aussie actor Dustin Clare as a champion gladiator. Whitfield is expected to make a brief cameo as Spartacus. (Jan. 21, 10 p.m., Starz.)

Cheering you on for Ultimate Victory

As most know, Andy will be replaced. It pained me to post this article link about recasting for his replacement. Like others have mentioned, Andy can never be replaced in the role of Spartacus.

Andy is a fire that burns deep in every heart and now that he travails with his real-life battle of cancer, he is showing us the true fighter he is, no different from his role as Spartacus.

I have said this before and will continue to reiterate...NEVER give up the battle, Andy, and our prayers will incessantly go out for you and your family. Stay strong. We will remain in the stands of that arena cheering you on for that ultimate victory!!
